Refugees’ RightsLiberal and Labor Party policies on refugees show no compassion and no justice. They are simply un-Australian.Both political parties treat us as if we are all racists. In fact, most Australians are immigrants themselves. We understand what drove families to come to Australia to build a new life. Most people have sympathy for refugees. The numbers of asylum seekers coming to Australia by boat is very low, less than two per cent of total immigration. Refugees are legal. Under international laws, everyone has the legal right to seek sanctuary from war, torture, starvation and other life threatening situations and to find a better life for themselves and their children. Asylum seekers who are forced to flee from their countries should be processed quickly and then the genuine refugees should be given support to build a new life here and start contributing to our community. Communist Alliance policies are:Processing (routine health and criminal checks) should be done on the Australian mainland in civilized conditions, not detention camps. Mandatory detention and immigration detention concentration camps should be abolished. The Communist Alliance supports an increase in naval patrols in order to save the lives of refugees. We believe Australia should have a refugee policy that gives priority to humanitarian and family reunion considerations. We eject migration based on financial considerations alone. We support implementation of the refugee rights set out in the UN Declaration on Human Rights.
